EFFECTS OF LIFTING AND LATERAL TRANSFERRING ON BALANCE IN COMMUNITY-DWELLING ELDERS

KHALED E. AYAD, MONA S. FAGGAL.

Abstract
Lifting an unfamiliar object in an upright position may jeopardize balance control due to bodily sway that may lead to a balance disturbance. Underestimating or overestimating the weight may have unfavorable effects on balance control. Purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of lateral transferring of an external load on balance in community dwelling elderly. Twenty elderly performed forward and lateral reaching tasks on the force platform to determine their limits of stability. Lateral transfer tasks of 0, 5 or 10 pounds were performed on the force platform to detect excursion of center of pressure in relation to the limits of stability. There was no significant difference in center of pressure excursion between 0 and 5 pounds lateral transfer; however, there was a significant difference between 5 and 10 pounds, and 0 and 10 pounds lateral transfer. Conclusion: loads heavier than ten pounds could cause more balance change.

Key words: transfer, balance, community, dwelling, elders
